FIREHOUSE

This is Engine Company 14, across 5th Avenue and down the block from City Bakery. It was built in 1894. I've walked by this firehouse thousands of times - to and from home - and to and from the bakery to Greenmarket and back. This morning, at a glance, it looked exceptionally beautiful.

Napoleon LeBrun. Architect of Engine Company #14.

The year after Engine Company #14,
Mr. LeBrun designed Engine Company #13
on the corner of Lafayette and White Streets.
How many more lovely firehouses could there be?

The Metropolitan Life Insurance Tower.
How many more lovely towers could there be?
[thought: not a lot].
Mr. LeBrun again. 1911.
