In what we know will be disappointing news to many of our customers on First Avenue near 13th Street, this past weekend we packed up and shut the doors to our bakery there. This was the storefront where an experiment to build a 240 square foot "green bakery" with no name first caught people's imagination and became the genesis of Birdbath Neighborhood Green Bakery. It's also where we've been mixing our doughs and baking since 2005. We moved out over the past 72 hours because Birdbath is growing and we needed a larger kitchen [we found it at Union Square, down the street from City Bakery]. Moving out of First Avenue happened in a blink, and it cheated us from the chance to say a heartfelt thank you to so many regulars through the years. Believe me, we would have preferred an orderly exit and the chance for a real goodbye, but we didn't control a situation where the deal to exit forced a timetable on us that offered no time. We'll miss the many of you who were steadfast regulars and friends, and we're sorry we didn't get to say that in person.

ReplyDeletei thought it was because of the starbucks! you will be sorely missed but I will occasionally visit the one on 3rd..it's sad how our neighborhood is changing...
