Before Union Square became the

food destination it is today,

it was a food wasteland.

In 1990 when we were building the

original City Bakery on 17th Street,

there was next to nothing in terms

of neighborhood food stores.

Fifth Avenue Epicure was one of

two places on the avenue back then,

the other being the pizza shop next

door to them. This morning, "For Rent"

signs are in its window, and this

ever-evolving neighborhood evolves

a bit more [the pizza shop remains].
